Emotionally
Durable
Design

Through the design of four chairs, exploring emotionally durable design showcases the potential this concept of sustainable design could have if considered when creating products. The four sub-categories identified work merely as a framework that can be suggested to makers that seek to achieve emotional durability in their work. For You, I’ll Change explores products that could adapt to the user’s needs and wants throughout their lifetime. Fun in Functionality celebrates sparking joy in everyday interactions with products by allowing products to break free from their expectations. Like Product, Like User looks at products that align with the users’ specific interests and needs. So much so, that products can be viewed as an aid to the user or inhabit a slice of their personality. Getting Better with Age focuses on materials that gain character with continuous use as well as observing how a product can gain new features or functions over time with the act of collecting or maintaining the product over time. All four categories work in unison to help strengthen the relationship between user and product in a bid to decrease consumption and promote sustainable lifestyle practices.
